I recently discovered that September 2nd was World Coconut Day. Admittedly, I never gave this fruit much thought before. It was a fruit that I conjured up when imagining myself stranded on an island, depending on it as my sole source of nourishment. It was just one of those foods that was just there, and nothing special about it at all. So, I went on a mission to change this impression that I had of coconuts: I tried some new snacks, broadening my own palate as well as paying homage to this holiday.
But first, what I learned about World Coconut Day
When I discovered that September 2nd was World Coconut Day, I decided to do a little research, and what I learned surprised me. For example, I learned that World Coconut Day is celebrated in many countries in Asia and in the Pacific, and has been an annual celebration since 2009 when the Asian and Pacific Coconut Community (APCC) was first formed [source].
I also learned that the purpose of this holiday is to share the many health benefits from eating coconuts, such as improving your heart and digestive system. Furthermore, coconuts are chock-full of many essential nutrients, such as fiber, antioxidants, and good fat. Coconuts can help to lower blood sugar and cholesterol levels, and can even shave off a few pounds around the waist! [source].
But perhaps the most interesting fact of all is how the fruit got its name. Apparently, in old Spanish and Portuguese tales for children, there was a bogeyman-like character named Coco. The coconut reminded them of Coco, and hence that is how the name came about [source].
5 new snacks that I ate for World Coconut Day
1. Organic Coconut Snacks
As you can see in the picture, the package advertises that these organic coconut snacks contain chia seeds, sunflower seeds, and pumpkin seeds. Despite, or because of, the label, I expected for the package to contain several different varieties of the three aforementioned seeds. Instead, what I pulled out was essentially a lopsided, shapeless snack which looked as if the seeds and some other type of agent were bonded together. It was quite interesting to say the least.
But despite its peculiar appearance, I really enjoyed eating this particular snack. It was crunchy and sweet and yet small enough that you can easily gobble it down in one bite.
2. Bevita Toasted Coconut Breakfast
This one was my daughter’s favorite. I would even say that it was one of my favorites. It reminded me of a graham cracker. It tasted more like a graham cracker with barely any hint of the coconut. In fact, I almost wanted to add a marshmallow and a Hershey’s chocolate on top and make the classic Smores with it. It was good and very filling, not to mention healthy. I will definitely eat this again, as well as try other flavors next time.
3. Organic Macaroons Coconut
I pulled out of one of the macaroons in the package. It reminded me of a small piece of bread, which happened to be pointy on top. It was almost like a rounded pyramid shape. When I took the first bite, I was unsurprised at how soft it was it. It didn’t taste sweet or bitter, or salty. It just tasted like coconut. And even though I am not the biggest fan of the taste of coconut, this snack wasn’t that bad. It’s probably not my first choice of snack, simply because it doesn’t have enough chocolate in it, but I would definitely eat it again.
4. Oui Coconut Yogurt
What particularly attracted me about this one is the container. The glass jar that the yogurt comes in is just so incredibly cute, as well as so versatile. My mind is already reeling with all of the possible things that I can do with these glass jars. For example, I can fill it up with water if I were to paint, or I can use it as small drinking cup. I could buy those Oui plastic lids here and fill it with all kinds of little goodies, like blueberries, pretzels, or seeds. I could even make a small snow globe with it.
Anyway, I really enjoyed eating this particular flavor of yogurt. I don’t ordinarily like the coconut flavor in many kinds of food. But in this particular brand, it wasn’t that bad. I enjoyed how creamy the yogurt tasted. It had a similar consistency to ice cream, but a lot less frozen.
5. Sunchy Coconut Water
And lastly, we all need something to drink after eating all of these delicious snacks. So, in honor of World Coconut Day, I of course picked up a can of Sunchy Coconut Water. I have never tried anything by this particular brand before. In fact, I have never tried coconut water before simply because I assumed that I wouldn’t like it.
When I tried it, I found it to be okay. It didn’t taste bad, but it probably wasn’t the best tasting drink either. I feel as if the drink was supposed to taste sweet, but it seemed to have failed somewhat. The sweetness was definitely very subtle. In that regard, it reminded me of taking a bite out of a dragon fruit. It looks good, but when you consume it, it turns out to not be as good as you expect. I would probably drink this again, but it wouldn’t be my first choice of beverage.
I really enjoyed eating all of these foods. Some were better tasting than others, and will definitely be eaten again. But a few was delectable enough to just be eaten once. Overall, this was a fun little exercise that gave me a good excuse to go shopping for extra snacks, as well as to discover new snacks.
