For anyone who decides that they want to blog, blogging seems like a fun, even easy, venture. Blogging even seems like an easy way to earn some extra cash. At first glance, it seems that blogging is just about writing an article, hitting publish, and then waiting for the views to come churning in. But anyone who has been blogging for awhile can tell you that blogging is not an easy undertaking. In fact, there is much, much more to blogging than simply writing a stellar post and waiting for the comments to come rolling in. Behind every blog post is the brainstorming of ideas, the SEO and keyword research, the search for the perfect images, and the reediting of the content. If that’s not all, ahead of every blog post is the promotional and marketing efforts on social media that every blogger must utilize in order to make the blog post reach as many people as possible. There is a lot to blogging than meets the eye. For that reason, I have comprised a list of 7 blogging tips that every newbie blogger should know.
Do create a catchy blog name
The first thing that you will be asked to do is create a blog name. I suggest that your blog name should be short, memorable, and relevant. At most, your blog name should be no more than 4 words. Most likely, your blog name will also be your domain name, and no one can be bothered to remember a long URL. I also suggest that you create a blog name that is different from the rest. You want it to be able to stand out. Remember that there are millions — trillions — of blogs on the Internet. You don’t want your blog name to be Anne’s Blog, for example, because there are a thousand Anne’s around the world, and many of them have a blog. You want it to be unique. You also want it to be relevant to your content and niche. In less than four words, you want your blog name to sum up your content, or give some idea of what your content is all about.
Do make a logo
Anyone who is well versed in social media marketing knows that a logo is a must for any blogger. Your logo is your symbol or your identification. It is what people will come to associate your blog with. Think of all the big name brands, such as Starbucks and Nike. When you see those big name brands’ logos, do you think of the brand? When you see the iconic white checkmark against an orange background, do you think of Nike shoes and clothes? When you see the iconic green mermaid, do you think of coffee, in particular Starbucks coffee? For that reason, having a logo is an absolute must.
Do have the important information at the top of the page
Most people will probably never scroll down to the bottom of your page. They will just glance at the top of your page. If they don’t see the information they came to see, then they will simply click out of your website. For that reason, do have the most important information at the top of the page. What is the most important information that you should have at the top of the page? Always have the blog name, logo, search bar, navigational links, and even your social media links at the top of the page. This way, the reader knows what site that they are on, where they can go to find the information they are looking for, and where they can go to find your social media pages. Remember that people are pretty lazy and they like to have the information they need in plain sight. Make it easy for your readers.
Do create content consistently
In order to keep your readers coming back, do create content consistently. Plan out your content and then determine when you will publish the content. Some bloggers choose to publish a post everyday. Some bloggers post three days a week, while some post once a week or even once a month. Whatever blogging schedule you decide, it doesn’t matter as long as you are consistent. A reader needs to know when to expect the next content so that they can keep coming back. Nothing says unreliable and unorganized then a blog that has content that is posted haphazardly.
Do focus on specific topics
While it is true that many bloggers do write about many different topics, I suggest that you focus on one or two specific topics. From there, create sub-categories and write about those topics. You want to be an expect in your topic. If you are a food blogger, then publish new recipes, behind the scenes blogs about meal prepping, and tips and tricks behind cooking. Similarly, if you are a lifestyle blogger, then focus on topics related to your life, such as parenting, relationships, and work. It might help to create a mind map with the main niche in the middle connecting three to five subcategories, and then those subcategories connecting to some topic ideas.
Do use an authentic voice
Whatever topics you choose, make sure that you are passionate about them. If you are genuinely passionate about your chosen topics, then write. As you write, your original, authentic voice will shine. Don’t try to be someone who you are not. Instead, write as the real you. Give your readers a sense of who you are as a person. Think of all of those blogs — and even vlogs — which are viral with millions of subscribers. Why are they so popular? It is because they are relatable and authentic. So, don’t be afraid to show your readers the real you. In each post, pour your heart and soul into it. Trust me, your readers will see and they will keep coming back.
Do write original content
And finally, please do write original content. It is just not nice to copy someone else’s content. Also, the moment that you do take someone else’s writing, you are at risk of losing all credibility in your future posts. No one wants to read something from someone who has stolen someone else’s words. So, just write original content. Write from your heart. Trust me, you have something amazing to say. Just believe and you can write great original content.
