This time last year, we were all stuck at home in lockdown. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, we had to spend one of the most beautiful times of the year at home, away from the beautiful, blooming flowers, the chirping birds, and the gently swaying branches, its leaves already green, lush, and full.
This year, however, as the restrictions begin to lift and more people are getting vaccinated, there comes a modicum of hope. This year, we have hope for a fresh start and new beginnings as we attempt to learn how to navigate the outside world the way we used to. It is perfect that that the possibility of freedom from the restrictions are coming now, in the spring, during a time that is typically associated with new beginnings and new opportunities.
As we begin to look onward, let’s think about what we can do this spring to make it truly beautiful as we slowly begin to regain a sense of normalcy in our everyday, mundane lives. Visit local and state parks
Visiting your local and state parks is often something that is put on the backburner. As with any popular attraction in your city or state, we often tend to put it off, saying that one day we will visit it but the problem is that one day never comes. Instead, we live our lives planning trips to faraway places, not realizing that sometimes beauty can also be found close by.
It may take anywhere from 5 minutes to 45 minutes to travel to a local or state park but trust me it is worth it. Visiting a park is like visiting a safe sanctuary. It is a place to view and admire nature and all of the wonders that it offers. Only in nature can we find the peace and tranquility that is so often missing in the daily grind of life. Only in nature can we find the ability to be released from sadness (SADs, or Seasonal Affective Disorder, in the winter is a very real thing indeed) and rediscover happiness. So, visit your local and state park so that you can rediscover the happy in you (and yes, happy and not happiness).
Create a garden
This spring, you should create a garden, if you have the space in your backyard. You should plant a variety of seeds — some flowers, some fruits, some veggies — and then watch as the seeds transform into something miraculous. It may be hard work to take care of a garden but it is well worth it. Just the very act of watching something that is a tiny seed become something with greater potential is a beautiful thing indeed. Watching any type of life grow into being is one of life’s greatest treasures.
As we hopefully reach the end of the pandemic, what better time then to create more life? What better time than to create a life that can help us to breathe better? What better time than to create a life that can help make the world a better place, little by little? It doesn’t have to be a big garden; even a small garden is enough to help bring happiness and positivity to the world that is already so bent on being cruel.
Try new recipes
Spring is a time for new beginnings. If you’re tired of trying the same ol’ food day in and day out, then open up a cook book, or hop onto Pinterest, and find some delicious new food that you can try. Nothing makes a day more monotonous then eating that same bowl of Chef Boyardee everyday. Make some new recipes with new ingredients that you’ve never tried before. Trust me, your palate and taste buds will thank you.
Paint a picture
Nature is probably the most beautiful thing in the world. The clear blue sky, the crystal clear water, and the high steep mountains glistening with snow are some of the most amazing things about this world. Step outside and see that one lone yellow flower petal lying on the dark pavement, in stark contrast and yet looking as if it still belongs. Step outside and see a rainbow rise up magnificently after a spring shower, or the small shallow puddles forming, waiting tantalizing for a small child to come out and play.
All of these things and more cannot just be expressed through words. It’s not enough. We have to paint a picture. We have to draw what we see. We have to sculpt the very beauty of nature. Otherwise, if we don’t, then how will the people of tomorrow know how beautiful life was despite everything.
Swimming is one sport that is hard to do in the winter, unless if you have access to an indoor pool. And even if you did, it still wouldn’t be the same as swimming in the warmer weather. The very act of swimming isn’t just about dipping your bathing suit clad body into the refreshingly cool water, but about other things, such as enjoying the heat from the sun, or going shopping for a new swim suit, or having a picnic on the beach or by the pool.
Swimming is a time when the body can fully rejoice as it meets water. It is a time for the body to be truly weightless. For the first time in forever, the body can just be, stuck in limbo as time stops temporarily. When swimming, the body can float transfixed as all worries and negative emotions are expelled from the body. Swimming allows the body to go back to a neutral state without terra firma holding us back. So, go swimming, release those worries, anger, and every other negative emotions, and emerge from that pool all the more victorious and rejuvenated.
Learn something new
Since spring is about new beginnings and new opportunities, it makes sense that we learn something new. Try taking up a new hobby, or revisit an old skill that you’ve abandoned a lifetime ago. Perhaps there’s a skill that you’ve always wanted to learn but never found the time. Make time and do it. Make time and learn something new during a time that affords us that opportunity.
There is always something new to be learned. Whether it is learning how to use Instagram effectively, or the best way to engage with your community. Whether it is learning how to play baseball, a sport that you’ve always wanted to learn but never did out of fear of childhood taunts. Or perhaps you want to learn how to play the guitar or the drums, or even the piano. Don’t be scared. Just go and take that first step into a whole new world.
Play a sport
As the weather get warmer, it is increasingly vital that we not just move those limbs indoors but outdoors as well. There are more benefits to being active outdoors such as replenishing our bodies with vitamin D. It could be as simple as kicking a ball or throwing a frisbee around. Or, you can join the local soccer team and play competitively.
Whether you are playing a sport just for fun, or to win an award, it doesn’t matter. What matters is that you are getting your body moving and letting it be active. Trust me, your body will thank you.
Write a book
As I’ve reiterated enough times in this article, spring is indeed a time for new beginnings. Also, coming close to an end of the Covid-era, why not use that time to write a book? Why not write about your experiences in a book? Or, write a story about an entirely new set of characters with different experiences from yours? Everyone has a story worth telling. We all have unique experiences created from different genetic combinations and experience. There is no such thing as a story that is too boring. Well, maybe, there might be. But, as long as you write in an entertaining, engaging way, it is bound to capture to heart of at least one person. If you can change or influence one person, then it is all worth it. Never mind the others.
Go hiking or camping
This activity is clearly difficult to do in the winter, unless if you want to get frostbite. But as the weather gets warmer, animals emerge from hibernation, and fruits and vegetables grow from their delicate beginnings, it is time to grab a backpack, some good hiking shoes, a tent, and go camping. It is not enough sometimes to just sit in the quiet of the house and enjoy nature. Sometimes there is nothing better than being one with nature. There is nothing better the opportunity to enjoy nature in its element. And the best part of this activity is that it still allows you to maintain proper Covid-19 protocol by separating yourself from other people.
Spring is a time for new beginnings and new opportunities. It is the perfect time to start over. Whether it is a new relationship, new job, or new school, it is a time to get rid of what’s not working and doing something different to change your life for the better, in the long term.
