3 Reasons Why You Must Join Your Local Buy Nothing Group Today

Three months ago, I joined my local Buy Nothing Group. I was attracted to the premise of this group. The premise of the Buy Nothing Group is simple: to give to others with no expectation in return. In my local Buy Nothing Group, I saw strangers give things to people without any expectation of money. I loved seeing people be kind to other people, even those they had never met before. It helped reinforce belief that perhaps there is still hope for people. Perhaps we can still hold onto humanity by having a little more faith. Perhaps people are really good-hearted deep down.

Be part of a community

By joining your local Buy Nothing Group, you become part of a community. According to Google, a community is “a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common.” The community that I found in my local Buy Nothing Group are people who are basically neighbors with one specific goal in mind: to give to others. By doing this with no expectation of any money or any type of currency, it helps to bring these people together.

In a world in which we are so often separated even in our own towns and cities because of race, socioeconomic class, or age, this group helps to eliminate these barriers. The people in this group are all united, working together to help each other. Being part of a community — any kind of community — is essential, I believe, for the ultimate success of not only the individual but the wider city or state. Humans cannot survive by doing things alone. It is by working with others that we find the greatest amount of success. It is by being there for other people that many find their true purpose and happiness.

Get rid of excess

One of the disadvantages to living in a home for a long time is that you start to accumulate a lot of stuff. Some of the stuff may be things that you need and use like furniture, electronics, and books. Some of the stuff may be things that you bought on a whim at the store because it was on sale or it looked cute, but you ended up stashing it in a closet. Or perhaps, you bought something and it just sits there in your home, barely getting any usage.

While it is nice to have a lot of stuff, but when it fulfills no useful purpose, then what is the point? What is the point to having so much stuff? All that you are doing is ultimately creating less space in your home for the things and people that really matter. All that you are doing is going into further debt or spending money that could be used for investing for the future.

If you have a lot of stuff and want to quickly get rid of some of it, then you can simply post it in your local Buy Nothing Group. It is a quick and easy way to get rid of stuff. You end up creating more space in your home, while also giving a new life to the item up for adoption. Not to mention it feels good to give things away for free. In a world that is so focused on consumerism and money, it is such a powerful feeling that you are essentially going against the currency of money and instead opting for the currency of love. The currency of love is the only thing worth sharing and having.

Find inner happiness

The local Buy Nothing Group helps to spread love, kindness, and ultimately happiness. When I say happiness, I mean true happiness. I mean, a happiness that fills your entire insides with such warmth that no amount of coldness can even attempt to affect it. I mean, a happiness that burns like a light fuse inside of you, and does not get easily extinguished into black oblivion. This type of happiness is one that can only be accomplished through action, rather than personal selfish deeds. Of course, you should do what makes you happy in order to be happy. But, in order to achieve this enlightened form of happiness, you must find a way to get that light fuse inside you to burn. One of the ways to do that is through action: by helping other people.

By helping other people, you contribute to something that is even greater than you. By helping other people, you are no longer alone in the world. In this dog-eat-dog world, it is easy to feel alone. It is easy to feel as if no one is out there supporting you. When it comes to surviving, it is up to us to make it and make something of ourselves. No wonder people are so competitive and willing to push the lesser man out of the way in order to achieve their own desires and ambitions.

But it shouldn’t have to be that way. It would be nice to live in a world in which the common man cares about others. It would be nice to live in a place where everyone thinks of others (even strangers) before themselves. How many people can honestly say that they would give a substantial amount of money, a plane ticket, or even a gift card to a complete stranger? To family and friends, sure that would be no problem for most people. But it is not enough to just help certain people. It is not enough to help people who happen to be related to us by blood or friendship.

We must all help everyone, no matter who they are. One of the primary responsibilities we must have is to be kind to others. If we can all do something nice to someone different every day, then this world would be a better place. If we have less competition and less individual drive, then as long as we are all nice to each other, then that’s OK. Because at the end of the day, we are all human. We are all here on this planet together. So, let’s live together in ultimate harmony and happiness.

  1. Hi, dear Helen.

Well, Anita and I have lived in our “snail-shell” as she calls our material possessions, for 30 years. You can imagine the filling of our snail shell! One of these days I’m going to “attack” my basement and clear out lots of old tools, many of which are still in very good condition. Line up if you want some! 😁
In the meantime, I have seen the poster before with a different, but equally applicable caption: “The only reason to look down on someone is if you are helping them up.”
Keep up the excellent blogging. your friend, always, c.a.

  2. I love the idea of not buying anything that isn’t essential – that’s how you realise that it’s not material things that make you happy.

    All the best, Michelle (michellesclutterbox.com)
